Cabarete ist ein kleiner Ort an der Nordküste der Dominikanischen Republik. Es gehört zur Provinz Puerto Plata und liegt etwa 40 km östlich der Stadt Puerto Plata.
Noch bis in die achtziger Jahre des 20. Jahrhunderts existierte Cabarete gar nicht. Dann wurde es für den Wassersport „entdeckt“.
Im Laufe der Zeit sammelten sich auf einem schmalen Band entlang des Strands immer mehr Windsurfschulen und Restaurants an, später auch Kitesurfschulen. Cabarete gilt als der beste Spot für Windsurfer, Kitesurfer, Wakeboarder und Wellenreiter in der Karibik. Es werden dort regelmäßig WorldCup-Rennen ausgetragen, z.B. der Kitesurfing World Cup (Copa Mundial Kitesurf).
Einmal jährlich kürt man in Cabarete den Master of the ocean, in einem mehrere Tage dauernden Wettbewerb aus den Sportarten Windsurfen, Kitesurfen und Wellenreiten. Seit Juli 2006 findet hier auch das Cabarete Classic statt welches die Kategorien „Slalom“ und „Freestyle“ im Windsurfen beinhaltet.
Die Windsurfer trifft man am Hauptstrand, die Kiter ca. 1 km westlich am Kitebeach und die Surfer (Wellenreiter) an der Playa Encuentro etwa 5 km westlich von Cabarete. Der Süßwasserfluss Río Yásica endet am östlichen Ende von Cabarete in „La Boca“ und ist glücklicherweise sauber sowie frei von unangenehmer Flora und Fauna. Er eignet sich hervorragend zum Wakeboarden, da er sich in ca. einem Meter Tiefe durch die tropische Landschaft schlängelt und somit auch bei windigeren Verhältnissen spiegelglatt ist. Cabarete ist ein Weltklasse Spot für alle vier Sportarten. Das haben sich mittlerweile nicht nur zahlreiche professioneller Filmteams zunutze gemacht.
Neben den Surffreaks reisen kanadische und US-amerikanische Touristen sowie Europäer nach Cabarete. Der Ort hat wegen der Surfer ein jugendliches, ‚hippes‘ Image. Neben Wassersport lassen sich in Cabarete Aktivitäten wie Mountainbike-Fahren, Reiten (am Strand oder in die Berge), Tauchen, Golf, Paintball oder Canyoning unternehmen. Die Infrastruktur des kleinen Ortes (etwa 10.000 Einwohner) ist gut, es gibt viele Restaurants, Bars und Diskotheken direkt am Strand und eine Vielzahl von Internetcafés und gut sortierten Surfshops.
Die Stärke des Euros gegenüber dem US-Dollar macht die Dominikanische Republik speziell für Europäer attraktiv.
Durch Cabarete verläuft, parallel zur Küste, die Hauptstraße von Puerto Plata nach Río San Juan. Da sich nur wenige Meter dahinter zwei Lagunen erstrecken (Laguna de Cabarete, Laguna de Goleta), hat die Straße im Zentrum von Cabarete einen Nadelöhrcharakter. Die Lagunen sind Naturschutzgebiet und deshalb touristisch nicht erschlossen.
Östlich des Zentrums liegen die Ortsteile ‚Camino del Sol‘, Jardin Deportivo‘. Auf der westlichen Seite der Lagune führt die Straße ‚Callajón de la Loma‘ zu etwa 1,5 km entfernten unterirdischen Höhlen (‚Las Cuevas de Cabarete‘ / Nationalpark ‚El Choco‘), in denen man schwimmen kann.
Etwa 5 km östlich von Cabarete mündet der Río Yásica ins Meer (Anfahrt über ‚Camino del Sol‘ oder ‚Jardín Deportivo‘). An der Flussmündung, ‚La Boca‘ genannt, trifft man vor allem Sonntags Touristen und einheimische Wochenendtouristen aus Santiago de los Caballeros, der etwa 70 km entfernten zweitgrößten Stadt der Dominikanischen Republik. Die Flussmündung eignet sich durch das flache Wasser und den Wind vom Meer hervorragend zum Kitesurfen.
Cabarete ist das Windsurf und Kiteboard Mekka. Ja, aber es ist mehr als das. ....
Cabarete's Reiz ist etwas subtiler. Es ist die einzigartige Atmosphäre, die intime Mischung aus Dominikanische Kultur und dem Flair der Karibik mit denen der Reisende aus der ganzen Welt konfrontiert wird und dem Charme des Landes verfällt.
Klima in der Region um Cabarete
Die warme Sonne und der klare blaue Himmel praktisch jeden Tag des Jahres, ist für die meisten Menschen der Traum von einem perfekten tropischen Paradies. Die durchschnittliche jährliche Temperatur liegt bei 25 ° Cund schwankt nur um etwa + oder - 2 ° C, je nach Saison. Die "heißesten" Monate des Jahres sind von Juni bis Oktober, wenn die Temperaturen tagsüberbei etwa 29 ° C oder etwas höher liegen.Im Gegensatz dazu, ist esetwas kühler von Dezember bis März, täglich circa 27 ° C.In der Nacht könnendie Temperaturen auf bis zu 5 ° C fallen.Im ganzen Land gibt es keine großen Temperaturschwankungen. Im Süden kann es etwas schwüler sein, denn dort fehlt die kühle Brise des Atlantiks. In den bergigen Regionen des Inselinneren kann es nachts und in höheren Lagen sogar Temperaturen um den Gefrierpunkt geben.Der Niederschlag variiert, nicht nur von Nord nach Süd sondern auch je nach Jahreszeit.Die „Regenzeit“ beginnt mit dem Winter und endet im April. In der Hurrikan Saison kann es auch mal zu heftigen Niederschlägen kommen. Vor einem Hurrikan braucht man an der Nordküste keine Angst zu haben,der höchste Berg der Insel der Pico Duarte mit seinen 3175m hält ihn von der Nordküste ab und lenkt ihn Richtung Südküste.

Vacation in the paradise
Cabarete is a small town on the north coast of
the Dominican Republic.
It belongs to the province
of Puerto Plata and is
about 40 km from the provincial capital Puerto Plata. Cabarete was unknown until the 80ies of the
twentieth century, and then it was “discovered” as a prime destination for
water sports. As time went by, more and more surf schools and
restaurants were built on the narrow stretch of land along the beach, later
kite schools became all the rage. Cabarete is considered to be one of the best
spots for windsurfers, kite surfers, wake boarders and surfers in the Caribbean. World Cup Races are held on a regular basis,
i.e. kite surfing World Cup (Copa Mundial Kitesurf). Once a year the “Master of the Ocean” is
nominated in Cabarete during a competition in the sports wind surfing, kite
surfing and surfing that last for several days. Since July of 2006 the Cabarete
Classic is held here with the categories “slalom” and “freestyle” wind surfing.
Wind surfers are to be found on the main beach,
kite surfers approximately one kilometer to the west on the kite beach and surfers
at Playa Encuentro, approximately 5 km. west of Cabarete. The river Yásica flows into the ocean at the eastern end of Cabarete at “La
Boca”, and fortunately
it is clean and does not have any unpleasant flora and fauna. It is excellent
for wake boarding and it meanders through the tropical landscape and has a
depth of approx. 1 meter and it is therefore as calm as a pond even when there
is lots of wind. Cabarete has world class for all 4 aquatic sports. This has
become widely known and not only professional film teams use the area but also
sports fans from all over the world. You can meet surf aficionados from Canada, the USA
and Europe in Cabarete. Due to the surfers,
Cabarete has an image as a destination for young people. Cabarete does not only
offer water sports but you can also mountain bike, ride horses (on the beach or
in the mountains), dive, golf, play paintball or canoe. The infrastructure of
the small town (approx. 10,000 inhabitants) is very good, there are a large
number of restaurants, bars and discos directly on the beach and you also find
several Internet Cafes and well- equipped surf shops. Thanks to a very strong Euro compared to the US
Dollar, the Dominican
Republic is particularly attractive for
Europeans. The highway from Puerto Plata to Río San Juan runs parallel to the coast through Cabarete. The road through Cabarete seems
very narrow since two lagoons are right behind it (Lagoon of Cabarete and
Lagoon of Goleta). The lagoons are protected areas and can therefore not be
used for tourism purposes. In the east of the center are the projects
“Camino del Sol” and “Jardin Deportivo”. In the west of the lagoon is the
“Callejón de la Loma” road which leads to subterranean caves (“Las
Cuevas de Cabarete”/ National Park “El Choco”) and its crystal clear waters invite
you to take a swim. About 5 km to the east of Cabarete the Yásica flows into the ocean (you get there by way of “Camino del Sol” or “Jardin
Deportivo”. On Sundays, you meet tourists and local week-end travelers from
Santiago de los Caballeros, the second largest city of the Dominican Republic
at the river mouth called “La Boca”. The river mouth is particularly suitable
for kite surfing because of the shallow water and the wind from the ocean. Cabarete is the Mecca of wind surfers and kite board surfers
but it is much more than that! Cabarete’s charm is much more subtle. It has a
unique atmosphere, a mixture of Dominican culture and Caribbean
flair to which travelers from all over the world succumb. The climate in the region of Cabarete A warm
sun and clear blue skies practically year round embody for most people the
dream of a perfect tropical paradise.
The average annual temperature is 25 degrees C. and only varies + or – 2
degrees C. depending on the season. The hottest months of the year are from
June to October, when temperatures during the day may rise to approximately 29
to 27 degrees C. Temperatures may fall
up to 5 degrees C. during the night. Temperatures generally do not vary much in
the country. It may be a bit muggier in the south due to the lack of the
Atlantic breezes. In the mountains in the interior of the country and higher up
temperatures sometimes fall to freezing point. Precipitations not only vary
from north to south but also depending on the season. The “rainy season” starts
in winter and ends in April. There may be heavy downpours during the hurricane
season. There is no need to be afraid of hurricanes on the north coast, the
highest mountain in the Caribbean, Pico
Duarte, with 3,175 meters protects the north coast and directs hurricanes to
the south.
